Description
A Support Worker or Health Care Assistant (HCA) provides essential care and support to individuals who require assistance due to age, illness, disability, or other conditions. They work in various settings, including hospitals, care homes, community centers, and private residences, ensuring the well-being, dignity, and comfort of those they support.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
1. Personal Care & Assistance
- Assisting with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, and toileting
- Helping clients with mobility and using aids like wheelchairs or hoists
- Providing medication reminders and support as required
2. Emotional & Social Support
- Offering companionship and engaging in conversations
- Encouraging and supporting clients to participate in social activities
- Helping with mental and emotional well-being
3. Household & Practical Support
- Preparing meals and assisting with feeding if necessary
- Performing light housekeeping duties (cleaning, laundry, etc.)
- Running errands such as shopping and attending appointments
4. Health Monitoring & Care Assistance
- Observing and reporting changes in a client’s health condition
- Assisting with prescribed exercises or therapy routines
- Liaising with healthcare professionals and family members regarding care
Requirements
Essential:
- Compassionate and patient nature
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under pressure and handle challenging situations
- Basic knowledge of health and safety in care settings
Preferred/Desirable:
- Experience in healthcare, social care, or a similar role
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Moving and handling training
- DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check clearance
